It leads to stagnation because the way of combat is never based on personal choice and fancies, but constantly changes from moment to moment, and the disappointed combatant will soon find out that his 'choice routine' lacks pliability. There must be a 'being' instead of a 'doing' in training. One must be free. Instead of complexity of form, there should be simplicity of expression." - Bruce Lee

Tagged: Athletic scholarships are given to individuals who demonstrate exceptional ability in sports. This is fairly common in the United States. Many talented sportsperson avail of them. Don't make the mistake of thinking that getting the scholarship is going to be a cakewalk. There is fierce competition for athletic scholarships. Academic records are also considered while granting an athletic scholarship. Your GPA and SAT score will be taken into account. Make sure you start early 'as the early bird catches the worm'. You should draw up a list of colleges, which meet both your academic and sporting requirements. You can divide your colleges into three categories - dream colleges, which are the elite colleges, good colleges where you have a realistic chance of getting into and back up colleges, which is your last resort. You should directly contact the coaches in the college. You can have a meeting with your high school coach, which will give you a clear idea about your potential. You can also receive useful advice by meeting a career counselor. Your profile should be made attractive to the coach. Unless you are a prominent national sportsperson you will be unknown to the sports coach. Your application should be organized and presented to make it unique and impressive. You should have patience as all coaches may not respond immediately because they may be tied up with busy schedule or have many applications to go through. It is your responsibility to make regular follow ups with the coach. Perseverance and patience will mostly reap rewards. There exist different college sports recruiting services, which you can use. The first step to get a scholarship is to register with the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) eligibility center. You can fill up a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This estimates your financial need and eligibility for offered grants and scholarships. This is later sent to the financial aid office of the college you are attending so that they can calculate an offer of student aid. The NCAA groups colleges into three divisions Division I, Division II and Division III. Only Division I and Division II schools offer athletic scholarships. You should make yourself familiar with the eligibility criteria of different colleges. Requirements differ in different colleges. Make sure you go through the literature. Finally it is the college, which gives scholarship not the NCAA. If you have heard of a particular scholarship and don't know its requirement write a letter directly to the college. You can go through the Internet and read books to get the required information. Although Division III schools do not give athletic scholarships they can aid you to find other sources of scholarships. If you do not get scholarships for elite sports you can try getting it for other sports with diverse profiles. If you have an outstanding profile colleges will clamor to enroll you. Getting the scholarship is not enough. You need to meet the academic and sporting standards throughout the duration of the scholarship. You need to play the sport in the off-season also. You have to keep yourself fit and injury free. Now that you are acquainted with the process of obtaining athletic scholarships don't waste time and immediately take steps to get your deserved scholarship.

Check this out! They say necessity is the Mother of innovation. Better health, and saving a couple extra cents is huge necessity these days. Not only do the look good and subtly taste great after you flavor them but for the price of one of those VitaWater's (which have all types of chemicals and colorings in them anyway), you can make a fridge full of your OWN. ^_^ Great activity for the fam, as well. LIKES for homemade drinks!

Tagged: World exclusive: Zinedine Zidane's journey from the rough back streets of Marseille to Madrid has been marked by racism, political controversy and superlative football. The world's best player tells Andrew Hussey of his pride in his Algerian heritage, his rage to be the best - and reveals why his talent can still be engulfed by flashes of violence Share 46 Email Andrew Hussey The Observer, Sunday 4 April 2004 The blank, dusty streets and high-rise tower blocks of La Castellane, a council estate in the northern suburbs of Marseille, are what is officially known in French as a quartier difficile, a sensitive zone. Most of the population here are first-and second-generation immigrants. The first wave came originally from Algeria and Morocco, in the Fifties and Sixties, but the inhabitants of La Castellane now come from all other points in the French-speaking world, from sub- Saharan Africa to the Caribbean. The people in La Castellane have no problem identifying themselves with Marseille, which has always been the toughest and most deprived of French cities. You can make out the bay and old port of Marseille from practically any vantage point in La Castellane and the second generation of immigrants are proud to adopt the distinctive slang and accent of the city as their own. But still almost everybody who lives here refuses point-blank to identify themselves as French. La Castellane is the home town of Zinedine Zidane, the Real Madrid playmaker who, as he approaches his professional peak at the age of 32, is probably the most complete and gifted footballer of his generation. This opinion is pretty much universal in football, especially among those who have worked most closely with him. Aimé Jacquet, the French coach whose victory in the 1998 World Cup was hammered home with two goals from Zidane in the final, claims to have recognised immediately that Zidane was a phenomenon. 'Zidane has an internal vision,' he told me 'His control is precise and discreet. He can make the ball do whatever he wants. But it is his drive which takes him forward. He is 100 per cent football.' Jacques Santini, the current manager of France whose goal is to win Euro 2004 with a side led by Zidane, is careful not to praise his players more than is strictly necessary. But he says pretty much the same thing. 'He never shies from responsibility either on the field or off it,' he says. 'That's why he is such a good influence on the game and such a captain. He is never afraid.' Fellow players, too, admire his consistency and strength, especially those who play alongside him. Luis Figo, a notorious stickler for efficiency and organisation in a team, describes his control and pace as 'extraordinary'. David Beckham, when I spoke to him, unabashedly called his colleague 'the greatest player in the world'. Even Thierry Henry, who recently lost out to Zidane for the title of Fifa World Player of the Year, admires his integrity, describing his team-mate in the France squad as 'the guy we can always count on, the one who really takes control'. If there is a criticism to be made of Zidane, it is that he does not respond well to failure and that he can drift in and out of play. Yet his technical brilliance can never be underestimated even during his quietest or darkest moments. Nowhere was this better demonstrated than in the European Cup final of 2002. Returning from suspension and battling to cast out the memory of two consecutive defeats in the final with Juventus, in 1997 and 1998, Zidane, on the stroke of half-time, lashed in a left-foot volley of almost supernatural brilliance against Bayer Leverkusen. The goal inspired Real Madrid to their ninth victory in the competition in their centenary year. In the days that followed the triumph, even the most sceptical madridistas , those diehards still faithful to the eras of Emilio Butragueño or Alfredo Di Stefano, all but bowed down before Zidane. In the past 10 years, Zinedine Zidane has claimed every top honour that the game has to offer. Most importantly, for the inhabitants of La Castellane, he has never forgotten his roots. His parents still live near the area in a large house in the only slightly posher suburb of Les Pennes-Mirabeau. One of his brothers, Farid, coaches the local team, Nouvelle Vague, which has Zidane as its life president. The kids here are grateful to him, even if they are indifferent to his status as a French national icon. 'When you say you're from La Castellane people are usually afraid,' says Karim, the goalkeeper with Nouvelle Vague. 'Then when you point out you play for a team led by Zidane, they suddenly show you respect.' In the rest of France, Zidane, nicknamed 'Zizou' by the public, is admired for his decency as well as his footballing skills. His public priorities are football, family and friends. His family are Algerian immigrants, so-called beurs (French slang for Arabs), and he describes himself as 'a non-practising Muslim'. Zidane's appeal transcends the religious and racial divide in one of the most tense multi-ethnic societies in Europe. Most notably, he recently came first in a poll for 'the most popular Frenchman of all time', beating the more established figures of ageing rocker Johnny Hallyday and crooner Michel Sardou. Most significant of all was the fact this poll was conducted in the Journal du Dimanche, the bestselling French equivalent of the Daily Mail. 'To be recognised by a whole country is incredible,' Zidane said of the poll when we met. 'This is massive. Before it was hard to talk about certain things, especially if like me you came from a difficult area or from an immigrant background. But now it tells you how France has changed and is changing. It's a message to everybody - politicians, the kids I grew up with, ordinary French people - about what can be done.' For many commentators, Zidane's wholly unexpected victory in this mainstream arena marked a new political maturity in France. French intellectuals are usually contemptuous of sport but the novelist Philippe Sollers was only half-joking when he called for Zidane to take over as French Prime Minister. In an equally provocative mood, the influential social critic Pascal Boniface hailed Zidane's popularity as no less than the beginning of 'a new Enlightenment'. Zidane is equally famous for sidestepping politics. 'I have no message,' he repeatedly remarked in the wake of his 1998 World Cup triumph. Zidane, and those close to him, claim that he rarely speaks because he is a naturally timid and modest person. But there are other reasons, too. 'There are too many sharks around Zinedine,' explains his brother Nordine. 'There are too many people who want to use him for political ends.' Consequently, Zidane's public persona has been as carefully constructed and as skilfully defended as any of his most elaborate midfield moves. He may be popular but, for most of the French public, he is also resolutely unknowable. It is difficult to imagine a place further removed from the industrial grime of La Castellane than the Real Madrid training ground, just off the Paseo de la Castellana, the long avenue that runs through the northern suburbs of Madrid. The security is tight but, once past the lines of autograph hunters, amateur photographers and lad-mag journalists looking for a story, the atmosphere among the super-rich and famous young men exercising on the several pitches or chatting in the mini-stands is surprisingly relaxed. No doubt last night's convincing victory over Sevilla in front of an ecstatic home crowd in the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu contributes to the amiable mood of the Real Madrid players. The arrival of David Beckham in an absurdly huge four-wheel drive with blacked-out windows sparks a flurry of activity as a group of girls rushes the gate. As I pass through the various dressing rooms a few minutes later, I can hear the younger Real Madrid lads teasing Beckham in Spanish. 'David, we love you,' they say. Beckham smiles, then chuckles, but he clearly does not understand. Meanwhile, at the far end of the pitch, Roberto Carlos is goofing around, practising scissor-kicks for a Brazilian television crew. As I walk over to greet Zidane near the players' tunnel, the left-back, who is obviously the joker in the Real Madrid pack, kicks a ball between us, comes over to bear-hug the French player and whispers noisily in his ear, making him laugh out loud. The gesture is no doubt meant as a reassuring signal not to take interviewers too seriously. The first thing I notice about Zidane is that for a player of such commanding elegance on the field, he is, in person, rather awkward, even gawky. He even sits delicately, like a girl, legs together, hands folded in his lap. My second thought is that he probably is genuinely shy. Yet there had been no trace of this at the official press conference earlier in the day. In the face of tough questioning from European football journalists - about his contract, about last night's cup tie against Sevilla and the future of Real Madrid - Zidane, speaking in both French and Spanish, had been controlled, diffident and ironic. But when I asked him where he felt most at home, he was guarded. 'I am first of all from La Castellane and Marseille,' he began, hesitantly. 'I love Madrid. I am happy to be here. I have been here three years and hope to be here longer. But I am proud of where I come from and never forget the people I grew up with. Wherever I go, La Castellane is where I want to go back to. It is still my home... It is true that it is still a difficult area, what is called in French a quartier difficile . But I think there is also a special culture there. I think Marseille is probably a place like Liverpool, very vibrant and very tough. I know players such as Bruno Cheyrou and Anthony Le Tallec, who should do well in Liverpool for this reason. My passion for the game comes from the city of Marseille itself. Unfortunately I can't go back there as much I want to because I play a lot here and abroad. But I am still a supporter of Olympique de Marseille. I used to go to see them play even when I was a player for AS Cannes.' He speaks with the clattering vowels peculiar to his home city and has the peppery, light-skinned features common to the Berber people of North Africa. The Berbers are not Arabs and in recent years the Berbers from the Kabylie region of Algeria, which is Zidane's family's home territory, have been in open conflict with the Algerian government. There are rumours of massacre and counter-massacre, but all that is really known in the West is that more than 100,000 people have lost their lives in the civil war that has devastated the country since 1992. Despite pressure from lobby groups, Zidane has never commented on the war in public or on his Berber origins; but he is clearly pleased that this identity should not be overlooked in the English-speaking press. 'My family are very proud of me, but I am very proud of them and where they come from. I am proud that they come from Kabylie. It is a special place and my roots there are important to me. We used to go all the time to my father's home village when we were young. But now, it's like Marseille and La Castellane: even though I want to go back it is difficult for so many reasons.' The Zidane family legend is that when Zinedine's father, Smaïl, left the family village of Taguemoune in the remote hills of Algeria, he came first to Paris and, like many of his compatriots, headed for the tough northern districts of Barbès and Saint-Denis (the latter is now, coincidentally, the site of the Stade de France, the venue for Zidane's greatest triumph when he inspired France to a 3-0 win over Brazil in the 1998 World Cup final). There was little work and even less money and so the family moved to Marseille, which, in any event, was culturally and geographically closer to the home country. On arriving in Marseille, in the mid-1960s, Smaïl worked as a warehouseman, often on the night shift. But he was an attentive father and was disturbed to discover that his son often had nightmares when his 'Papa' was away. He remembers Zinedine as a 'gentle little boy' but one who was still energetic enough to smash all the lights in the apartment with his ball. Zidane talks about his father with respect and admiration. 'I'm very inspired by him,' he tells me. 'It was my father who taught us that an immigrant must work twice as hard as anybody else, that he must never give up.' Zidane talks about his own young family with pride. He married Véronique, who is of French-Spanish extraction, in 1992. They met while he was at Cannes and they now have three boys, each with an Italian name. 'They are all good footballers,' he says. 'I would be happy for them to go into the game. But they must work hard first. That is what I have learnt.' Smaïl did not watch the 1998 World Cup final - he was looking after Zidane's son Luca - but he declared himself moderately pleased with the goals that his 'Yazid' had scored. 'It was a great thing for us all,' says Zidane, recalling the patriotic joy that enveloped France after the match. 'We were a family who had come from nothing and now we had respect from French people of all sorts.' This was when Zidane mania reached its height in France, when posters, graffiti and rap songs declared 'Zizou Président' and the Algerian flag flew alongside the French tricolour on the Champs-Elysées. The euphoria did not last long. Within days of the famous victory, Jean-Marie Le Pen, leader of the Front National, was growling in the press about the racial origins of the France team, singling out Zidane for faint praise as 'a son of French Algeria'. His comment was carefully loaded. The term 'French Algeria' is never neutral in the French media: it returns one inevitably to the colonial state that only ended in 1962 after a long and brutal war. The implication was that as 'a son of French Algeria', Zidane was either a colonial lackey or a traitor to the country of his father's birth. Then one of Le Pen's henchmen declared that if Zidane was acceptable to the French it was only because his father had been a harki . This Arabic word describes the Algerians who fought for the French during the Algerian war and who were massacred or fled to France in its aftermath. Harkis were the forgotten victims of the colonial war, hated by their own people who saw them as collaborators and despised by the French, who remember them with shame. The insult was calculated to cause damage and hurt, especially in the suburbs such as La Castellane. One of the most immediate conse quences of this libel was that the friendly match between France and Algeria at the Stade de France in October 2001 proved to be one of the most harrowing moments of Zidane's career. The event was billed as an historic moment of reconciliation between two nations who could not quite live without each other and who had, since Algerian independence, never met on a football field. The reality was grotesque. In the lead-up to the match Zidane received death threats. During the game, he was booed and taunted and, he says now, was 'disconcerted' by the posters that read 'Zidane-Harki'. The match was abandoned after a pitch invasion in the second half, with young French Arabs chanting in favour of bin Laden and against the French state. The multicultural adventure launched by the French team of 1998 was in disarray. The far right was on the move. Zidane's response was to this fiasco was finally to break his public silence about his father's identity. 'I say this once for all time: my father is not a harki ,' he announced to the press. 'My father is an Algerian, proud of who he is and I am proud that my father is Algerian. The only important thing I have to say is that my father never fought against his country.' Since this statement, Zidane has become more comfortable and less defensive about his origins, feeling free to lend his support, in the company of Gérard Depardieu, to a recent campaign against the Front National, or becoming the public face of young immigrant France, the so-called génération Zidane . As we chat about Algeria, Marseille, music and family, the atmosphere becomes more relaxed; hands are unclasped and Zidane talks with real enthusiasm. 'I was lucky to come from a difficult area,' he says. 'It teaches you not just about football but also life. There were lots of kids from different races and poor families. People had to struggle to get through the day. Music was important. Football was the easy part.' It's easier now to imagine Zidane as the precociously talented teenager, nicknamed 'Yaz' by his brothers, practising his intricate footballing touches in the gravel of Place de la Tartane, the central square in La Castellane. Yet photographs from this time show an anxious child, eager to please, self-conscious but determined. 'Yazid was a very modest, humble lad,' says his childhood pal Doudou. 'We used to tease him about this. But we also knew if one us would succeed it would be him. He was always very sure of winning.' One of the theories about Zidane as a player is that he is driven by an inner rage. His football is elegant and masterful, charged with technique and vision. But he can still erupt into shocking violence that is as sudden as it is inexplicable. The most famous examples of this include head butting Jochen Kientz of Hamburg during a Champions League match, when he was at Juventus in 2000 (an action that cost him a five match suspension) and his stomping on the hapless Faoud Amin of Saudi Arabia during the 1998 World Cup finals (this latter action was, strangely enough, widely applauded in the Berber community as Zidane's revenge on hated Arab 'extremists'). Zidane's first coaches at AS Cannes noticed quickly that he was raw and sensitive, eager to attack spectators who insulted his race or family. The priority of his first coach, Jean Varraud, was to get him to channel his anger and focus more on his game. According to Varraud, Zidane's first weeks at Cannes were spent mainly on cleaning duty as a punishment for punching an opponent who had mocked his ghetto origins. By the time he arrived at Juventus, in 1996, he had become known for his self-control and discipline, both on and off the pitch. He had developed these traits during a spell at Bordeaux under Rolland Courbis, a fellow marseillais and one of the craftiest heads in French football. Courbis understood immediately that Zidane was an untamed talent. He described the player's two years at Bordeaux as a period when he most needed direction. It was at Bordeaux that he acquired the nickname 'Zizou' and learnt to keep his emotions under tight control. 'You could see he was an extraordinary player straight away,' says Courbis now, 'but it was a moment in his career when you couldn't afford to do just anything with him. For example, you couldn't just give him his head and burn him out in a season.' And yet in his early days at Juventus, particularly in big matches, some of his temperamental faults would resurface, and there were doubts over his ability to lead from the centre of the pitch. The coming years in Serie A hardened him and it was no accident that during this period he emerged as probably the best midfielder in the world. However the Juventus fans, including the club president Gianni Agnelli, were dazzled by his football but baffled by his reluctance to take advantage of the rewards on offer in Turin - the girls, the nightclubs, the cars. Unlike Michel Platini, who been loved by the Juve fans as much for his flamboyant wit as for his football, Zidane was remote, inscrutable, devoted to his wife, his extended family and his children. The move to Madrid has helped him to relax and to become more comfortable with his celebrity. 'I don't know if we are the best team in the world,' he says of Madrid, 'but I know that I am lucky to be playing alongside some of the best players around. It's a dream.' He is excited about Euro 2004, especially after the mysterious failure of France in the last World Cup, although he is diffident about the game against England on 13 June. He singles out Beckham for praise ('he has adapted well to the life here and the game; he is very good indeed') but is less interested in other aspects of the English game. 'I have never had the opportunity to play in England, so I know little about it,' he says. 'The England team must always be respected. They always fight to the end...' The voice tails off and the statement is punctuated with a shrug. In Madrid, where his racial and cultural identity are mostly irrelevant to his fans (although Spaniards can be among the worst anti-Arab racists in Europe), Zidane has found a city in which he claims to feel at ease. 'It is a Mediterranean city,' he says, 'and that is really my culture.' And yet there is still the same recognisable and palpable tension in his play and in his manner. The difficulty for Zidane, and he admits as much, is that no matter where he goes or what he achieves it is impossible for him to avoid being caught in the vicious crossfire of French racial politics. He has consistently refused, for example, to be associated, even in the most minor way, with the beur culture of reggae, rap and raï, which are the true soundtrack to life in the crowded French suburbs (raï is the hybrid Arabic pop of North Africa), even to the extent of getting his managers to ban the sale of CDs made by local bands from Marseille that celebrated him in music. Most tellingly, after the 1998 World Cup, Zidane published a book, Mes copains d'abord (My Friends First), with Christophe Dugarry, fellow veteran of Bordeaux and the World Cup squad. Zidane was here more explicit than he had ever been before about what the victory had meant for him and his commu nity: 'It was for all Algerians who are proud of their flag,' he said, 'all those who have made sacrifices for their family but who have never abandoned their own culture.' No one seemed to notice when this quotation was quietly dropped from the second edition of the book. Nor that, in allowing this to happen, Zidane had committed a minor but telling form of self-betrayal. Zidane's occasional violence may well be a product of this internal conflict: the French-Algerian who is for ever suspended between cultures. But it is equally likely that, although in public he presents a serene and smiling face, he is underneath it all every bit the same hard nut he had to be to survive the mean streets of La Castellane. 'Nobody knows if Zidane is an angel or demon,' says the rock singer Jean-Louis Murat, who is himself a fan of the player. 'He smiles like Saint Teresa and grimaces like a serial killer.' This much had been in evidence at the match I had watched at the Bernabéu the previous evening. For most of the game, Zidane had patrolled the centre of the pitch with his customary authority and flair, tracking the Sevilla midfield with subtle predatory instinct. Just once or twice his nostrils flared and a boot went in harder than it should have done, or a Seville player was snapped in two by a reckless tackle only an inch or two from assault. 'I may have had a lot of luck in my life, but I still need to find a challenge in the game,' he says the day after the match. These are not words that explained or justified his irregular outbursts of violence, but they do suggest that there is much more to Zidane. 'It's hard to explain but I have a need to play intensely every day, to fight every match hard,' he told me. 'And this desire never to stop fighting is something else I learnt in the place where I grew up. And, for me, the most important thing is that I still know who I am. Every day I think about where I come from and I am still proud to be who I am: first, a Kabyle from La Castellane, then an Algerian from Marseille, and then a Frenchman.' · Andrew Hussey is the author of 'The Game of War: The Life and death of Guy Debord'. He is working on a cultural history of Paris. His last piece for OSM, on the boy boxers of Marrakesh, was published in the issue of December 2003

Tagged: Bruce Lee Quotes I’ve included some of my favorite Bruce Lee quotes below. I’ve organized them using the following categories: Art / Artistry, General, Goals, Growth / Learning, Life, Mistakes, Positive Thinking, Personal Development, Power / Speed / Flexiblity, Self-Awareness, Simplicity, Time, and Truth. Art / Artistry Art calls for complete mastery of techniques, developed by reflection within the soul. Art is the way to the absolute and to the essence of human life. The aim of art is not the one-sided promotion of spirit, soul and senses, but the opening of all human capacities – thought, feeling, will – to the life rhythm of the world of nature. So will the voiceless voice be heard and the self be brought into harmony with it. The second-hand artist blindly following his sensei or sifu accepts his pattern. As a result, his action is and , more importantly, his thinking become mechanical. His responses become automatic, according to set patterns, making him narrow and limited. General It’s not what you give, it’s the way you give it. Know the difference between a catastrophe and an inconvenience. — To realize that it’s just an inconvenience, that it is not a catastrophe, but just an unpleasantness, is part of coming into your own, part of waking up. Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable. Obey the principles without being bound by them. Showing off is the fool’s idea of glory. Take no thought of who is right or wrong or who is better than. Be not for or against. Take things as they are. Punch when you have to punch. Kick when you have to kick. “What is” is more important than “what should be.” Too many people are looking at “what is” from a position of thinking “what should be.” Goals A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at. If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done. Make at least one definite move daily toward your goal. Growth / Learning A quick temper will make a fool of you soon enough. As you think, so shall you become. A wise man can learn more from a foolish question than a fool can learn from a wise answer. Don’t fear failure. Not failure, but low aim, is the crime. In great attempts it is glorious even to fail. Empty your mind; be formless, shapeless – like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend. Ever since I was a child I have had this instinctive urge for expansion and growth. To me, the function and duty of a quality human being is the sincere and honest development of one’s potential. I am not teaching you anything. I just help you to explore yourself. If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else. It will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. If you want to learn to swim jump into the water. On dry land no frame of mind is ever going to help you. In order to taste my cup of water you must first empty your cup. Knowing is not enough, you must apply; willing is not enough, you must do. The knowledge and skills you have achieved are meant to be forgotten so you can float comfortably in emptiness, without obstruction. Life Life is better lived than conceptualized. — This writing can be less demanding should I allow myself to indulge in the usual manipulating game of role creation. Fortunately for me, my self-knowledge has transcended that and I’ve come to understand that life is best to be lived — not to be conceptualized. If you have to think, you still do not understand. Life is never stagnation. It is constant movement, unrhythmic movement, as we as constant change. Things live by moving and gain strength as they go. Life is wide, limitless. There is no border, no frontier. Life itself is your teacher, and you are in a state of constant learning. Man, the living creature, the creating individual, is always more important than any established style or system. Real living is living for others. Reality is apparent when one ceases to compare. — There is “what is” only when there is no comparison at all, and to live with what is, is to be peaceful. The key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering. Mistakes Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them. The great mistake is to anticipate the outcome of the engagement; you ought not to be thinking of whether it ends in victory or defeat. Let nature take its course, and your tools will strike at the right moment. Positive Thinking Choose the positive. You have choice, you are master of your attitude, choose the positive, the constructive. Optimism is a faith that leads to success. If you think a thing is impossible, you’ll make it impossible. To hell with circumstances; I create opportunities. Personal Development Absorb what is useful, Discard what is not, Add what is uniquely your own. Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it. I am learning to understand rather than immediately judge or to be judged. I cannot blindly follow the crowd and accept their approach. I will not allow myself to indulge in the usual manipulating game of role creation. Fortunately for me, my self-knowledge has transcended that and I have come to understand that life is best to be lived and not to be conceptualized. I am happy because I am growing daily and I am honestly not knowing where the limit lies. To be certain, every day there can be a revelation or a new discovery. I treasure the memory of the past misfortunes. It has added more to my bank of fortitude. I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations and you’re not in this world to live up to mine. The spirit of the individual is determined by his dominating thought habits. What you habitually think largely determines what you will ultimately become. Power / Speed / Flexibility A powerful athlete is not a strong athlete, but one who can exert his strength quickly. Since power equals force times speed, if the athlete learns to make faster movements he increases his power, even though the contractile pulling strength of his muscles remains unchanged. Thus, a smaller man who can swing faster may hit as hard or as far as the heavier man who swings slowly. Do not be tense, just be ready, not thinking but not dreaming, not being set but being flexible. It is being “wholly” and quietly alive, aware and alert, ready for whatever may come. Endurance is lost rapidly if one ceases to work at its maximum. I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times. Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind. One should be in harmony with, not in opposition to, the strength and force of the opposition. This means that one should do nothing that is not natural or spontaneous; the important thing is not to strain in any way The athlete who is building muscles though weight training should be very sure to work adequately on speed and flexibility at the same time. In combat, without the prior attributes, a strong man will be like the bull with its colossal strength futilely pursuing the matador or like a low-geared truck chasing a rabbit. The less effort, the faster and more powerful you will be. When one has reached maturity in the art, one will have a formless form. It is like ice dissolving in water. When one has no form, one can be all forms; when one has no style, he can fit in with any style. Self-Awareness After all, all knowledge simply means self-knowledge. Fear comes from uncertainty; we can eliminate the fear within us when we know ourselves better. As the great Sun Tzu said: “When you know yourself and your opponent, you will win every time. When you know yourself but not your opponent, you will win one and lose one. However, when you do not know yourself or your opponent, you will be imperiled every time.” Knowledge will give you power, but character respect. The biggest adversary in our life is ourselves. We are what we are, in a sense, because of the dominating thoughts we allow to gather in our head. All concepts of self-improvement, all actions and paths we take, relate solely to our abstract image of ourselves. Life is limited only by how we really see ourselves and feel about our being. A great deal of pure self-knowledge and inner understanding allows us to lay an all-important foundation for the structure of our life from which we can perceive and take the right avenues. To become different from what we are, we must have some awareness of what we are. To know oneself is to study oneself in action with another person. Understanding comes about through feeling, from moment to moment in the mirror of relationship. When we hold to the core, the opposite sides are the same if they are seen from the center of the moving circle. I do not experience; I am experience. I am not the subject of experience; I am that experience. I am awareness. Nothing else can be I or can exist. Simplicity It’s not the daily increase but daily decrease. Hack away at the unessential. Simplicity is the key to brilliance. To spend time is to pass it in a specified manner. To waste time is to expend it thoughtlessly or carelessly. We all have time to spend or waste, and it is our decision what to do with it. But once passed, it is gone forever. When there is freedom from mechanical conditioning, there is simplicity. The classical man is just a bundle of routine, ideas and tradition. If you follow the classical pattern, you are understanding the routine, the tradition, the shadow – you are not understanding yourself. Time Flow in the living moment. — We are always in a process of becoming and nothing is fixed. Have no rigid system in you, and you’ll be flexible to change with the ever changing. Open yourself and flow, my friend. Flow in the total openness of the living moment. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Moving, be like water. Still, be like a mirror. Respond like an echo. If you love life, don’t waste time, for time is what life is made up of. The moment is freedom. — I couldn’t live by a rigid schedule. I try to live freely from moment to moment, letting things happen and adjusting to them. The timeless moment. — The “moment” has no yesterday or tomorrow. It is not the result of thought and therefore has no time. Truth All fixed set patterns are incapable of adaptability or pliability. The truth is outside of all fixed patterns. Truth has no path. Truth is living and, therefore, changing. Awareness is without choice, without demand, without anxiety; in that state of mind, there is perception. To know oneself is to study oneself in action with another person. Awareness has no frontier; it is giving of your whole being, without exclusion. Where to Go From Here? While there are countless resources on the Web, and you can always check out his movies, my favorite book on Bruce Lee, is by Bruce Lee. It’s Tao of Jeet Kune Do . Aside from the fact that it’s written by the master himself, I like the fact that Bruce wrote it while he was bedridden for six months. You can just imagine how Bruce, the warrior, put everything he could into sharing the best of what he knew, while dealing with a pretty traumatic point in his life. I also like the simple sketches throughout the book which show how he borrowed the best of the best, such as the boxer’s hands or a wrestler’s grappling moves.

Tagged: How to Become a Ball Boy/Girl in Tennis You can make an appearance in a major tennis championship even if you are not too good at playing tennis. How? Just become a ball boy/girl! This Buzzle article will tell you how to become one. Tennis is an amazing sport. You need great skill to be on the court in a Grand Slam. Not all of us have the expertise of a professional tennis player, but most of us dream to be a part of the action on the court, in a major event. Even if you lack the skills of a pro, you can make your dream come true by becoming a ball boy/girl. When you become a ball person you have the opportunity to be involved in a tennis match, you will be able to interact with the legends of the game, and if you observe keenly, you might also learn a few tricks to win a match. I have divided this section into 2 parts. The first part will tell you what you should have to become a good ball person, and the second part will tell you what you should do to become a ball boy/girl. Essentials to Become a Ball Person Becoming a ball person is easy, if you have the following: Love for the Game If you do not love tennis, then you might get bored with your work after a few matches. You are not going to earn much, so when your job schedule turns out to be tiring, the only thing that will motivate you will be your love for the game of tennis. To become a successful ball boy/girl you should have a strong liking for the game, without it all your efforts are futile. Understanding about the Game If you do not understand the game of tennis, you will not be able to figure out what is happening on the court. If you have a good understanding about the game, you will know how to act during a match. You should know all the regulations, and the terms in tennis. Knowledge about Your Job What does a ball boy/girl do? You should have a complete knowledge about the tasks which you will be performing as a ball person. There is more to a ball person than retrieving the ball. Knowing your job description will help you prepare mentally and physically for your job. Physical Fitness You might have great love for the game, and you might have a good understanding about it, but if you are not physically fit, you will not be able to serve as a ball boy/girl, as this job is physically demanding. You will have to run up and down the court several times during a match, and there will be numerous matches in day, so if you are not physically fit you will not be able to do your job efficiently. Time for the Tournament The tourney will obviously last for several weeks, so you will be completely busy during these weeks. If you have some other engagements (like exams, appointments, etc.), then you might not be able to serve till the end of the tournament. Make sure that you will have enough time for the tourney before you think of applying for the vacancy of a ball person. Things to be Done to Become a Ball Person If you have the essentials mentioned above, you should: Check for Advertisements and Apply A few months before every tourney, the organizers look for able ball persons. They might advertise the vacancy for the ball persons using the newspapers, radio, Internet, etc. You should constantly keep looking for such advertisements. If you are interested in any tournament, you should apply immediately (as the vacancies will be limited). Attend the Training Program Generally, if you want to be a part of a major tournament, you will have to attend a training program. You will have to perform really well in the program, as your performance will be evaluated at the end of your training, and you will be selected for the tournament only if you have a good score. After you are selected, you will get an invitation to the tourney. Being a ball person will be fun, as you will be in proximity to your favorite stars, and if you serve in a major tournament, you will surely have lots of things to brag about throughout the rest of your life.

Tagged: Is it Safe to Swim while You're Pregnant? We all know that swimming is a good way to exercise and keep fit. But, is it safe to swim during pregnancy? If yes, what are the parameters for it? To know more about it, keep reading. For all those who want to know whether it's safe to swim while you're pregnant, the answer is; YES! Expectant mothers can definitely pursue swimming if they wish to do so. A pregnant woman is guided to work out to maintain good health. There are separate exercises and planned schedule for the expectant mom in her daily routine. Some doctors do recommend swimming as one of the exercises but, a lot of people have their doubts, whether swimming can be a good exercise during pregnancy or not. In fact, many of them believe and have a firm opinion that swimming during pregnancy is harmful for the unborn baby. They do not want to give a second thought to their opinion and see if it can work positively. Fortunately, it is a good form of exercise even during pregnancy. The benefits obtained through swimming are equal to those gained from other exercises during pregnancy. You only have to take a few precautions for ensuring safety. The following part will tell you the benefits of swimming during pregnancy followed by the precautions to be taken. Benefits Swimming during pregnancy does not put an additional stress on the body parts like other forms of exercises do, rather, water supports your body and makes you feel lighter in weight in spite of the heavy weight in the lower abdomen. It increases your body's ability to produce and use more oxygen, improves blood circulation, and tones the body muscles. According to the American Pregnancy Association, it is the safest exercise during pregnancy as it has lesser chances of injury. Many expectant ladies have a problem of nausea during morning, which can be reduced with swimming. Swelling is also a major problem in most of the pregnant women and it makes them feel uncomfortable at times. Swimming helps reduce swelling. Precautions to be Taken It is safe for a healthy pregnant woman to swim, but, those with health problems like constipation, heart problems, lung problems, etc., need to consult the doctor before taking up the activity, because in such cases, bed rest is highly recommended. You will need a maternity swimsuit at the third trimester, till then you can use a normal swimsuit. If you were used to swimming before pregnancy, you can continue it without any major change in your routine. Even if you are not a regular swimmer, you can swim during pregnancy after consulting your health care provider. You should remember that you cannot dive in, but, start off slowly and gradually. Don't forget to stretch and warm up the body before swimming. If you are good at swimming, you can stay for at least 30-40 minutes in the water to provide sufficient workout to your body. There are many other issues related to swimming during pregnancy, like its safety in a chlorinated pool, in a lake, etc. You ought to know that there is no research, which says that it is unsafe to swim in a chlorinated pool. Instead, experts say that it is beneficial for the mother as well as the baby. The only thing is to check whether the pool is disinfected, to get rid of the pathogens. The expectant mom should shower before swimming to remove loose organic matter because the organic matter like skin cells come into contact with chlorine and form its by products which is harmful. The problem with lake for many people is 'water temperature'. The ideal water temperature recommended by USA Swimming Association is 74 to 84º F and swimming in warmer waters can be harmful. However, while swimming in a lake, care should be taken only with regards to entry and exit in the lake because of your growing body structure. Though you are familiar with the lake before pregnancy, it might get difficult during pregnancy. Avoid stepping onto the slippery edges so as to prevent yourself from slipping. Thus, scrap out any misconceptions about swimming during pregnancy as it's one of the best exercises to keep yourself as well as your baby healthy. Do not forget to consult your doctor before including swimming as a part of your exercise regime.

Tagged: Aqua Aerobics - Water Aerobics Exercises Aqua aerobics, or swimming pool exercises, is a great way to get fit without the usual risks of injury and pain associated with conventional aerobic workouts done on land or in a gym. Aqua aerobics, also referred to as water aerobics, is one of the most effective and safe ways to get yourself into shape. Basically, these are exercises done in a swimming pool. Usually, an instructor stands on the deck of the pool, demonstrating various arm, leg and core exercises, which a class of exercisers, standing in chest deep water, follows. These exercises are usually done to rhythmic music. Weights can also be included in the workout. Each workout session runs for about 45-60 minutes. It begins with a warm-up session, which incorporates slow cardio and stretching exercises to get the muscles ready for the increased activity to follow, and ends with a cool-down, where the limbs and other parts of the body are stretched and relaxed. According to estimations, about 500-700 calories are burned in a whole session. Like other forms of aerobic workouts, swimming pool exercises have benefits like helping you in losing weight, lowering blood sugar levels, reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, and so on. However, aqua aerobics has additional benefits over other forms of aerobic exercises. Since the buoyancy of water supports 90 percent of the body, practically anyone can do aquatic exercises, regardless of factors like fitness levels, obesity, age, and health conditions. For instance, swimming pool exercises is an ideal way to start for newbies just beginning an exercise program. It conditions all the major groups of muscles, as well as the lungs and heart. Plus, it is a gentler way of building cardio-respiratory and muscular endurance. Is Aqua Aerobics for Overweight People? People who are overweight also find aerobics a great way to exercise. One of the reasons overweight people get quickly discouraged from continuing an exercise program is the great stress their joints and ligaments undergo in conventional aerobics, which can result in injury and pain. However, because the body gets buoyant in water, and less stress is put on joints and ligaments, it not only reduces the chances of injury, but overweight people can actually enjoy their workout. This can be a great motivating factor for them to stick to their exercise routine, and thereby shed their excess weight. Water Aerobics for Injured Water aerobics is also excellent for people recovering from an injury or surgery, or with health conditions like heart problems, arthritis, backache, osteoporosis, and so on. This is because the cushioning effect of water makes the exercises gentler on the body, while providing an effective workout. As a matter of fact, many sports personalities with injuries use water exercises to rehab. For instance, one can safely strengthen muscles by jogging in water, since it cuts out the stress of heavy impact when it is done on land, which can actually exacerbate the injury. Besides, apart from getting an overall workout, exercises concentrated on the injured part can also be safely done, thus helping to quicken recovery. Water Aerobic Exercises for Pregnant Women Aqua aerobics is particularly beneficial for pregnant women. With the added load in their belly and the increase in weight during pregnancy, most women find conventional forms of exercising quite difficult. Besides, there is the higher risk of sustaining injury in the hips, back, or other parts of the body. The fear of injury, in fact, often results in pregnant women being too cautious about exercising, or giving it up altogether. However, this is the period when they need to be at their fittest, in order to have a better birth process, and be a healthy mother to a newborn child. The buoyancy of water alleviates the fear of injury, which relaxes pregnant women. Plus, it also helps them to perform movements which they would find hard to do on land. Can Aerobics be Practiced by Aged? Another group of people for whom aqua aerobics is ideal is senior citizens. Many people in this age group have age-related conditions like brittle bones. Besides, if they have not been exercising, conventional aerobics done on land can be pretty tough on their aging bodies, increasing their chances of either injuring themselves or worsening a health condition like heart disease. Water's buffering effect protects them from such risks. Besides, the group activity that aerobics provides is also an additional benefit for this age group, for it gives them an avenue for overcoming loneliness by meeting new people and forming friendships. Aqua Aerobic Exercises To derive a great cardiovascular workout, one has to push the body through the water and work through the resistance. Most of the water aerobics exercise do not require any equipment, however, water weights, benches, noodles, etc. can be used for a good workout. It is recommended, that one does the exercises without any equipment in the initial stages and add weights to increase resistance after a certain period. Some of the exercises, which can be a part of the workout include: Marching / Jogging: Depending on fitness level one can either choose to march or jog in the water. It helps in strengthening the lower body including the thighs, hamstrings and quadriceps. For better results, one should interval train, with each interval spanning 30 to 60 seconds with a break of 20 to 30 seconds between two intervals. K-Tread: This is an exercise for the upper as well as the lower body, as it works the arms, back and chest as well as buttocks and hamstrings along with the abs. Stand on one leg and make small circles with the other leg. As you do this cup your hands and resist the buoyancy of water with your hands. Repeat the same with the other leg. Repeat the exercise for 30 seconds before you switch sides and repeat it 3 times on both the sides. Leg Raises: This is a core strengthening exercise. To do this exercise, one will have to stand with the back against the pool wall and the hands on the wall behind. Slowly lift both your legs up, as though you want to touch your knee to your forehead. Hold the position for a few seconds and then release your legs. Repeat the exercise for 10-12 reps. Kicks: People with weak knees or those who want to tone their thighs should do kicks in water regularly. There are three types of kicks, which can be performed in water, namely the side kicks, forward kicks and back kicks. Begin the exercise by standing closer to the edge of the pool. To do the forward kick, lift the leg and extend it straight in front. Likewise to do the side and back kick extend the leg either backwards or to the sides. Finish 10 reps of side kicks on one leg and then switch to the other leg. Similarly, do the repetitions of the other kicks. Jumping Jacks: If the primary aim is to shed some pounds, then this is the exercise which certainly should be a part of the workout. It will work the entire body. The buoyancy of water will ensure you do not injure yourself, yet get a good exercise. It is seen that doing jumping jacks in water gives better results, as compared to doing them on the ground. On the whole, aqua aerobics can be a fun way of working out, which the participants usually look forward to with enthusiasm and anticipation. Besides getting into better shape, due to the well-known therapeutic powers of water, aquatic exercises can be a form of relaxing and de-stressing.

Tagged: Volleyball Court Dimensions Volleyball, a sport enjoyed as a hobby, pass-time, and also played professionally worldwide. To have good game sense, besides the rules and the required skills, one needs to be well-versed with the court and its dimensions. Have a look at the diagram along with the content here to get a good idea. Volleyball can be played in the backyard, on the beach, outdoors on a ground, and professionally on indoor courts. But whatever the surroundings, amenities, etc., the dimensions of a volleyball court will need to be the same. Anything bigger or smaller would hamper the smooth playing of this game. Hence, if you are planning to set up a court on your property, educational institution, or club, follow the dimensions as shown in the diagram below. Besides that, we'll also have a look at the rules, scoring, and something about beach volleyball. Standard Dimensions of a Volleyball Court The dimensions of a volleyball court require to be 60 feet × 30 feet. In meters, this amounts to 18 × 9. Around the court, there should be an area called a free zone, which is 10 feet on all the sides, thus making the entire area needed 80 feet × 50 feet. The court is divided into two sides equally by a net, making each side a dimension of 30 feet × 30 feet (9m × 9m). The net is one meter wide and runs from one sideline to the other all across the court. It actually extends by 1 meter on both sides of the court, giving it a total length of 11 meters. In the men's competition, the net is placed at a height of 2.43 meters from the ground, at the center. For the women's game, the same is at a height of 2.24 meters. Each side is divided into two zones. The attack zone or the front zone is from the net towards the middle of the court, and measures 3m × 9m. This is where the three attackers are situated. The defense lines up in the remaining area of the court called the back zone, which is 6m × 9m. Though, while the game is in progress, the players obviously switch positions and move around even outside the court as and when required. The service area is a 3 meter section at the right side of the back line at both ends of the court. Volleyball Rules and Scoring The rules are not that complicated as one may presume. A volleyball team consists of six players. Three play as attackers and the other three play as defense. The three attackers are the front left, front center and front right players. The three in defense are the back left, back center and back right players. The player in the right back position serves, and needs to be outside the service line (back line). He has to execute the serve within eight seconds of the referee blowing the whistle. The ball needs to be tossed up to serve, and only after completion of the serve, can the server step inside the court. A player can touch the ball only once, and the team can touch the ball not more than thrice in a single play. A point is won when the ball is grounded successfully into the opponent's court. The ball has to cross the net within the poles or antennas to be considered as a legal play. A point to note is that the sidelines and baselines are also a part of the court. Hence, any ball landing on them and touching them in any way is considered to be in. A point is also won when the opposing team hits the ball out of the court. Penalty points are also awarded by the referee as per his discretion in case of any faults committed. When a sideout is won by any team (the receiving team wins the point), the players move clockwise and switch positions. In other words, the front right player becomes the back right player (server). A match usually consists of three sets (games), with the team winning two sets emerging victorious. 5-setters with a best-of-three winner are also played in bigger tournaments. The team reaching twenty five points first, with a difference of two points at least, wins the set. Beach Volleyball Beach volleyball is more of a fun version of the game, and was invented around thirty years after volleyball first started. You can call it fun-in-the-sun volleyball. The difference here is that in this type of volleyball, there are only two players on each side. There is usually 1 foot of sand needed on the court. Anything less would be slightly dangerous, as unlike indoor volleyball, there is no protection gear worn on the hands or legs in beach volleyball. Another difference is the scoring system in this version, in which each match is a best of three sets, the winner of each set being the first to reach 21 points with a difference of two. If the match goes to a deciding set, the first to reach 15 points with a difference of two, wins. Also, timeouts for coaching purposes are not allowed here, unlike the indoor version. The dimensions of a beach volleyball court are the same as an indoor court, i.e. 60 feet x 30 feet. Even the height of the net for both men and women is the same as the indoor version. Volleyball has gained a lot of popularity over the years, and is played in almost every country around the globe. Besides being played for fun, it is also part of some serious competition worldwide, like the World Championships and the Olympics. Lastly, this game is good news for cardio and muscle building.

Tagged: Warning Signs of Heat-Related IllnessIf you have been exercising or playing sports out in the heat of summer, take precautions to make sure you are not putting yourself at risk for heat-related illnesses.)'' Heat exhaustion and its more severe counterpart, heat stroke, occur when your body can't cool itself down and your temperature rises to dangerously high levels. It can result from exercising too long in the heat but also from physical or lifestyle factors. Spending too long in a house without air conditioning, not dressing right for the weather, not drinking enough fluids, being overweight or having chronic medical conditions are all factors that can raise your risk of heat illnesses. Pay attention to these warning signs of heat exhaustion: Temperature higher than 100 degrees Low blood pressure Fast, weak pulse Moist skin, sweating Muscle cramps and tenderness Nausea, vomiting Dizziness or lightheadedness Confusion Rapid breathing Heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke. A major sign is that the person will have a high temperature (about 105 degrees) but will not be sweating. Other symptoms include a rapid pulse, dizziness, blurred vision and confusion. Get help immediately if you suspect someone has heat stroke. For other heat illnesses, start by getting those affected out of the heat and into shade or air conditioning, according to the National Institutes of Health. Have them lie down and offer water or juice if they can swallow safely. If they are able, they should take a cool shower or hold a cool cloth to the neck, wrist, armpits or groin.

Actually, I love training! Lol and we have a great time in class at The Official Shaolin HKB HQ here in Fredericksburg. But, what I LIKE is the sentiment. Training is a journey and not all of it is easy and not all of it feels good, but it's always the things in Life we want to give up on that make the biggest breakthroughs for us. The worst feeling is plateauing, the best feeling is breaking through it to continue the Rise!!

We have decided to cancel class for tomorrow and then assess the situation on Wednesday morning, if indeed we find ourselves in the aftermath of damaging weather. This decision is especially important for those of us who travel great distances to be at class. Everyone travel safely tomorrow and lets hope that this turns out to be an unnecessary precaution. We don't need anymore loss of power in the area, that's for sure. Take care everyone. Please pass the word on.

Tagged: 10 Heavy Bag Training Tips 1. Pay Attention The number one problem of heavybag training is that it builds bad eye habits. The two common problems I see are fighters staring too hard at the bag or not looking at the bag. Too Much Staring This kind of intense eye contact is pretty cool since you feel like a hunter keeping his eye on the target. In the ring, staring at a target telegraphs to your opponent where you are going to punch next. Whatever you do, do NOT look down when you throw a body punch. This makes the punch so much easier to defend and so much easier to counter. You especially don’t want to telegraph a body punch because your head is wide open. Don’t stare too much at one spot that you can’t see anything else. The correct way to look at the bag is to just look forward. Imagine the bag as opponent in front of you and try to keep the entire bag in your field of vision. You want to keep an eye on his head and body movements at the same time. You aim your punches but you’re not staring so much into one spot that you can’t see anything else. Lazy Eyes This is when the fighter is not even looking at the bag. Believe it or not, some fighters can’t answer when I ask them, “What are you looking at when you punch?” I’ve caught new boxers staring at the ground or just looking to the side when they throw big punches. It’s amazing how often boxers punch blind when they get tired. Don’t just let your eyes roam all over the place. Lazy eyes leave you vulnerable in the ring! Stay focused and pay attention to the bag. This increases your accuracy and more importantly, so you can see counter-punches coming your way. Best way to cure lazy eyes: put little squares of duct tape around the bag to give the eyes something to look at…or just spend more time using other equipment like the double-end bag which keeps your eyes alert. Ultimately you want to keep your eyes on the bag without staring into it. You want to have a general awareness of the entire heavybag. Keep the bag in view and also be aware of how far the bag is from you at all times. 2. Keep Your Balance Throw punches at the bag but don’t throw yourself at the bag. Stand on your own two feet and don’t fall into the bag. Keeping your balance makes for better punching power and better footwork around the heavybag. Don’t use the bag to hold you up. Don’t push with your shoulders; this bad habit allows skilled fighters to keep you off-balance by moving when they feel you leaning into them. Worst of all, do not push the bag around with your head; that’s just a great way to leave yourself open for uppercuts. 3. Punch, Don’t Push Don’t push the bag, hit it. Don’t make the bag swing all over the place, give it a seizure. There’s an old saying that goes, “If you want to know who’s hitting the bag correctly, just ask the blind man.” This is because you can tell if you’re punching correctly just by listening to the sound of your punches hitting the bag. What you want a snapping SMACK sound when you punch it and not a dull THUD sound. In case you don’t know, I wrote guide a while back: How to Throw a Snapping Punch A push punch will only push the bag around as your arms get tired. A fast snap punch will jolt the bag in place with a big smack sound. Relax your arms and throw quick snapping punches. Commit some power but don’t have your fist making contact with the bag for too long. As soon as you make contact, return that fist and throw the next punch. You can always tell if you’re pushing if your arms are getting tired quickly. Again, limit the amount of time your fist makes contact with the bag. 4. Ground Your Feet When You Punch Plant those feet when you punch. Being grounded means more balance, more power, more control, more mobility to move away after the punch, more everything! You can move around all you want but when it comes time to punch, ground your feet! If you find it hard to keep your feet on the ground, just take smaller steps when you move around. The pros punch so much harder because their feet are always on the ground even as they move around the ring. 5. Move Your Feet When You’re Not Punching Move your hands or move your feet. As my trainer use to say, “Move your hands or move your feet or move your head.” If you’re not making an offensive move, you’re making a defensive move. Because a heavy bag isn’t punching you, we won’t worry about head movement but we can definitely work on foot movement. Always move when you finish punching. Keep Your Distance Maintain a proper distance at all times. Move with the bag and keep it at arms reach at all times. Don’t let the bag get too far or too close. Don’t be lazy with your legs. Move with the bag instead of standing there and waiting for it to come to you. Back up when it comes at you and follow it if it swings away. If you can’t move your feet as swiftly as the bag swings, you need to lighten up the punches or get a heavier bag…or develop better footwork. 6. Don’t Wait This is what seperates the men from the boys. Watch any professional fighter work the heavybag and you’ll see that they’re ALWAYS throwing punches. Even when they rest, they only rest for maybe 2 seconds at most. The beginners are always waiting around in between combinations. They’ll throw big punches and then just walk around for 5-10 seconds to catch their breath. These long periods of inactivity will kill you. Real fights don’t have 10-second breaks for you to catch your breath. The moment you stop punching, your opponent starts punching. So what’s the moral of the story? –NEVER STOP PUNCHING! You don’t always have to punch hard, but you have to keep throwing. Put in some light punches and jab as you move around the bag to catch your breath. When you’re ready to throw the big shots again, step in and fire away. 7. Less Power, More Breathing Hitting the heavy bag is a lot like running–it’s all about the breathing! Don’t worry so much about trying to hit hard. Focus on explosive breathing, not explosive punches. Stay relaxed and work on your breathing so you don’t get tired. Power comes from good technique, endurance comes from good breathing. Power and endurance has very little to do with how much effort you put into your punches. The pros throw hundreds of power punches using nothing but good technique and breathing. Good breathing allows you to stay relaxed and throw many punches without tiring out. Good technique allows you to deliver maximum power without wasting any of the energy you put into the punch. Don’t let the bag wear you out. A bag works at your rhythm which is only when you want to punch. Learn how to conserve your energy for more challenging workouts like the double-end bag or sparring. If you’re still getting tired against a heavy bag, you’re not ready for competition. 8. Throw 3-6 Punches Throwing 3 to 6 punches at a time is the sweet spot. Not 1, not 2, and NOT 10. It’s enough to do damage, yet short enough for you to get out before your opponent fires back. Combo all your punches together. Try some normal combos (1-2-1-2, 1-2-3, etc) as well as some unorthodox combos (1-3-2, 3-1-2-3-3, etc). Fights are fought in combinations, not single punches. Keep throwing combinations and keep up that rhythm. Aim your punches high for the head and low for the body. The biggest problem I see is people who don’t punch high enough for the head. Come time to fight, their shoulders get tired because they’re not use to punching high. 9. Be Active When You Rest Everybody gets tired. The important thing is that you’re always doing something. Don’t just stand there when you get tired. Keep moving! If you’re going to rest, do it as you’re moving around and throwing light punches. Do NOT rest by leaning on the bag or doing your Mike Tyson slip choreography. Worst of all, do not rest by standing still like a punching bag. 10. Keep Your Hands Up You have to be careful not to get carried away with your power. It’s easy to be lazy on defense when the bag isn’t punching back. You THINK your hands are up but you don’t really know until you get punched. You could be racking up hundreds of hours on the heavy bag developing a bad habit and not find out how open you are until you step into the ring. Don’t drop your right hand when you throw the jab and especially do not drop your right hand when you throw the left hook. Don’t just cover your head; keep your elbows down to protect the body as well. The most helpful tip I can recommend is to have a trainer or friend watch you and yell at you every time you drop your hands. Heavy Bag Training The heavy bag training is for developing efficient power, not absolute power. You’re not breaking bricks with a single punch. You need power punches you can sustain throughout an entire fight, not just for one round. Keep your hands up, move around the bag, and make sure you’re always throwing fast punches. Pay attention, stay balance, and work that bag! If you do it right, it gets easy. The heavy bag becomes a warm-up for the real workout, which is in the ring.
